About

Kia ora, and welcome to the flock!

This blog is for everyone who’s ever stopped mid-walk to listen to a tui sing, planted a kōwhai and hoped for a visitor, or simply looked up into the trees and wondered: What’s that bird doing up there?

We’re here to celebrate one of Aotearoa’s most iconic and entertaining native birds—the tui—and everything that makes them weird, wonderful, and worthy of your attention.

From their musical genius and garden antics to their nesting habits and full-blown treetop soap operas, this blog is your go-to space for:

  • Fun facts and fascinating behaviours
  • Tips on planting native to attract birds
  • Deep dives into tui song and communication
  • Backyard observations and birdwatching stories
  • Practical ways to support native birds in your own space

Whether you’re a lifelong bird nerd or just discovering the magic of native wildlife, you’re in the right place.

Who’s Behind the Blog?

Just an everyday New Zealander who got hooked after hearing a tui mimic a car alarm.

(Seriously. That’s all it took.)

Since then, this space has grown into a little corner of the internet dedicated to appreciating, understanding, and protecting the amazing native birds that call our backyards and bushlands home—starting with the tui.

What’s Next?

More posts! More birds! More tips for making your garden a haven for all things feathered.

And maybe a few ridiculous stories along the way (because birds have no chill, and we love them for it).

If you’re keen to stay in the loop, feel free to follow along or subscribe. Got a question, photo, or tui tale to share? Get in touch here — I’d love to hear from you.

Thanks for visiting. And remember: if you plant it (and keep the sugar water clean), they will come.
